Direct sow amaranthus seeds outside after all danger of frost. Scatter seed over ground that has had the top 1 in of soil loosened. Rake seed in lightly, walk over the area to firm soil. Keep moist until germination. You can start Amaranthus seed indoors. We recommend an indoor start, six to eight weeks before the last frost in your area. Sow seeds early in the season and cover lightly with soil. Keeping them at 65-75°F., the seeds germinate is in 10-21 days. Make sure to harden off the Amaranthus seedlings before transplanting them outdoors. Amaranthus plants will take off and grow quickly as soon as daytime temperatures regularly reach 70°F The plant name comes from the Greek word "amarantos" meaning "unfading" in reference to the long-lasting flowers of some species.
